Good point about Reagan versus Carter. The latter actually practiced the values that evangelicals claimed to follow. Reagan’s popularity with that base probably rested less on nationalized health care and more on his racist dog whistles and invocations of American exceptionalism. Unless, of course, we make the reasonable assumption that they saw that health care as another form of welfare.
