Black Hat Brigade: Episode 5

Santa Clause: They can't be here for me. I'm not afraid.

Jack Frost: Maybe they're here for you.

Boogey Man nervously backs away, nearly ready to flee.

Susan Pevensie: They may be here for me. I shouldn't pay them any mind, if I were you.

The Guardians and the Boogey Man both stop in surprise to look over.

Susan Pevensie wears a slim, black winter suit. A zipped up black jacket, form fitting black snow-pants, faux fur lined boots, a black muff for her hands, and a black Russian fur hat.

Santa Clause: I remember you! Susan Pevensie! How did do at battle? Did you kill many enemies of Narnia?

Susan: I did not fight. Aslan said that war is ugly when women are involved.

Santa Clause: That is not makingk any sense. War is always ugly.

Susan: Quite.

Jack Frost: Eh, if the Night Mares are here for you... why aren't they coming for you?

One Night Mare leaps into the air.

Susan: My fears have the good sense to attack with subtlety.

Susan pauses a moment to pull a hand out of her muff long enough to punch the landing Night Mare on the snout, causing it to leap back.

Susan: Most of them, anyway.

Tooth Fairy: Oh, I know, the one who lost her memories of Narnia-

Sandman yanks the Tooth Fairy down and covers her mouth. The symbols that appear over his head indicate that this is not a good topic of conversation.

Susan narrows her eyes on the tooth fairy, but lets that go.

Susan: Santa Clause, I'm disappointed with you. After Fred Clause, I'd have thought you to have a more nuanced understanding of morality and interpersonal relations.

Santa Clause: We are not able to take much from Fred Clause. This movie needs care. Is Paul Giamatti making Vince Vaughn watchable. This is very delicate magic. Must not be disturbed.

Susan: That is understandable. *turns head and speaks to the Boogey Man* Oh, don't stand there staring at those Mares. They're never far from the wise, so it's best to get used to them.

Boogey Man: At this point in the movie, they're usually about to do something unspecified to me off screen.

Susan: Well, this time, you'll be better than that.

Boogey Man: Really? Aren't I supposed to get my comeuppance for my evils?

Susan: Yes, well, let's look into that, shall we? *points to Jack Frost* You, the boy with the stick. What is your motivation throughout this movie? What is your reward?

Jack Frost: Well, learning what my core is, I guess... oh, and being believed in so that I can interact with people, instead of being forcibly invisible for all of my immortal existence.

Boogey Man: And, that's my motivation, too!

Jack Frost: But, you tried to achieve yours by torturing children.

Boogey Man: There is that. But, what options did I have? It's not like any of us were given a choice by the Man in the Moon.

Easter Bunny: Now wait a minute, here! You were chosen by the Man in the Moon, too!

Boogey Man: Isn't that the established mythology for how we become what we are?

Easter Bunny: But, I thought the Man in the Moon chose us to fight you.

Boogey Man: Fight me? You laughed at me when I first showed up. Easter Bunny, you're the one who said that no one was afraid of me since the Middle Ages. That was centuries ago and I hadn't been a legitimate threat between then and now. What kind of battle was that?

Santa Clause: We are Guardians, not fighters against one man. We Guard the wonder and the memories and the dreams and the hopes of children.

Susan: Children don't need to only be defended, Santa Clause. When you gave me a bow and arrow so I could go about doing the defending, I was still a child.

Santa Clause: But, not for very much longer. You were growing into woman and needed strength.

Boogey Man: And, was about to face great fears. I have a place, a good place, a proper place in growing up. Children need to face the small fears that I can accomplish because they will grow up to face much greater fears. Or, they need to confront their fears.

Boogey Man: To think, if, in what could have been a millennium of time, just one of you had been open to the possibility of me being a constructive force for youth, not just guarding them against terrors when many of them need to learn how to face the very real terrors they have to deal with, this might have been a much different movie.

Susan: Quite. And, I must say that it is refreshing to see someone see potential so quickly.

Santa Clause: I am not entirely convinced. But, maybe we talk sequel? Maybe Guardians learn lesson, Santa apologizes for unknown naughtiness, and more complex moral reality understood for audience that enjoyed first movie and now has grown up to be accepting of more complex narrative?

Boogey Man: Oh, that would be delightful.

Susan: Perhaps, some day. The Black Hat Brigade still needs more help. But, Mr. Man, if you would come with me, you can help us.
