That would also explain why the Fordly world would think ill of Iceland. Within this book, the conditioning reminds of things like "progress is beautiful" and, of course, noting progress as purely a matter of technology making things more comfortable and entertaining.

With less in the way of facilities and more in the way of nature, Bernard would actually have more of that internal quiet that he wants.
