With these kinds of texts, triumph would involve making some significant and positive change to the problems of the society, even at great cost. (Hunger Games trilogy, for instance, ends in triumph, but at huge cost that can't be unpaid.)

We'll talk about the end and the fates of Bernard, Helmholtz and the soon-to-be-met John when we get to the end. For now, suffice it to say, they don't and, indeed, can't change the society they're in.
