Setting: The entrance to a dark cave. A woman walks in. She wears a black, Elizabethan style, dress with a wide brimmed black hat. She carries a black parasol.
From the darkness, a smooth, dark voice speaks.
Voice: The wise will tend to avoid walking into the lion's den.
Woman shows courtesy, but neither fear, nerve, nor any need to display strength.: I do apologize. Were there a door, I would have knocked.
Voice: Ah, brazenness and courtesy.
Woman: I find the two traits do me quite a service.
Voice: Someone like you must have come a very long way to see someone like me.
Woman: Indeed. Before I explain, I do wish to call you by the correct name. I am given to understand that you were given a different name upon your birth?
Voice: That name is Swahili for "trash". I prefer the name that at least describes something about me.
Woman: Scar it is, then. Scar, I am Susan Pevensie and we both have something in common. We have both been done injustice by our respective cannons.
Scar steps out of the pitch black into a barely visible shadow. :Really? You, the heroine who was called a good queen for the virtue of her species?
Susan: Have you read Last Battle? How about A Horse and His Boy? I'm given no respect in Prince Caspian. All because I have some respect for my appearance. I was only called good so long as I was not an immediate example of vanity and soft-headed femininity.
I don't claim to have your same experience. But, you know what it is to have the Cannon claim you are something you are not. After all, estimating by the maturation rate of lions, you lead the pride through two years of harsh drought.
Scar: The Hyenas' have experience with privation. I merely employed the counsel of their best advisers.
Susan: Wisely done. But, that's hardly acknowledged by the Cannon, is it? Even though it leaves little other option.
Scar: Of course not. I died as a villain because of my coded evil coloration and my coded gay voice and manner.
Susan: That is why I'm here, Scar. The stories have been simplistic for far too long. Simple morals that break people down into heroes and villains, on rare occasion deigning to make a sympathetic villain. To my world, women are broken down into the ugly, the vain, and the good.
We need more complexity in our stories. A mind such as yours can help, Scar.
